Managed LAN/WLAN

When the problem is inside the site, start with the local network.

Wired Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wireless LAN (WLAN) are designed and managed within agreed scope. For consistent sites, review spaces, devices and operations.

Radio coverage, cabling, devices and on-site responsibilities require a design for each location.

Let’s talk
Business sites connected by a fibre network.

How it works

A connected office starts before the WAN circuit.

Devices
APs / switches
Access and segmentation
LAN and WAN uplink

From the device to the right segment

Wi-Fi access points and switches provide entry to the local network. Define Wi-Fi names (SSIDs), virtual segments (VLANs) and authentication to separate staff, guests and devices for the project.

Colt can manage the agreed infrastructure; specify inventory, technologies, monitoring and change permissions. WAN uplink and security have their own demarcation.

More WAN bandwidth does not always improve Wi-Fi

For a slow room, examine coverage, interference, channels, client density and uplinks. For wired devices, check errors, negotiated speed and Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Compare a local test with an Internet test. This separates radio, access, DNS and application issues before resizing the WAN.

What happens when a device fails?

A switch failure can affect ports and the access points it powers. Coverage from a neighbouring AP does not ensure sufficient capacity for all users.

Assess power, uplinks, spares and redundancy where critical. Test recovery, authentication and mobility with representative devices.

Illustrative case: from situation to decision

Situation
Video calls fail in one room but work over cables elsewhere in the office.
Option
Check coverage, interference and local load before increasing Internet access capacity.
Check
Compare wired and Wi-Fi tests, radio utilisation and access-point uplinks.

Wi-Fi coverage and continuity depend on the building, devices and agreed architecture.

Decisions for your project

Coverage and density
Floor plans, room usage, interference and device counts.
Identity and segments
SSIDs, VLANs, authentication and guest policy.
Local operations
PoE, uplinks, power, support, spares and change windows.

From design to operation

Office assessment, coverage and segmentation design, pilot and acceptance using local and WAN tests.
