Ethernet Services
Connect sites while keeping control of your network.
Ethernet carries Layer 2 (L2) frames. It fits when you want to retain your own routing; start with locations and who will manage routes.
It does not provide routing, security or physical diversity on its own; these must be designed.
Let’s talk
How it works
Connect sites while keeping control of your IP architecture.
Site A · LAN
Layer 2 Ethernet
Site B · LANFrom the port to the remote site
The service carries frames between handover points. The variant defines point-to-point, multiple-site or hub-and-spoke connectivity; Virtual LANs (VLANs) identify segments according to the design.
The customer defines addressing, inter-subnet routing and security. Agreeing maximum packet size (MTU) and tagging prevents a live circuit from passing some flows while silently breaking others.
Site A · LAN
Layer 2 Ethernet
Site B · LANCapacity and quality are different
Separate port speed, contracted capacity and offered load. Measure utilisation, errors and loss at both ends before blaming transport for a slow application.
For replication and backup, check windows, bursts and available service classes. A larger circuit does not fix slow storage, a saturated interface or a LAN loop.
Site A · LAN
Layer 2 Ethernet
Site B · LANAn agreed recovery path
If access fails, recovery depends on contracted protection or a second connection. Two VLANs on one circuit are not two physical paths.
Test failure and restoration without introducing loops, with clear switching and routing responsibilities. Verify service resilience separately from application resilience.
Illustrative case: from situation to decision
- Situation
- Two sites need shared services, but the team wants to keep its routers.
- Option
- Compare Ethernet and IP VPN according to who will own routing.
- Check
- Test segments, frame size and recovery with applications at both sites.
Ethernet carries Layer 2 traffic: routing, security and physical diversity need a design.
Decisions for your project
- Topology and handover
- Sites, ports, VLANs, tags and compatible MTU at both ends.
- Load and priority
- Committed capacity, bursts and traffic that cannot wait.
- Demarcation and continuity
- Who owns routing, security and loop prevention; alternative path and failure tests.
From design to operation
Inventory endpoints and flows; validate handover, test frames and MTU, then migrate with a defined rollback.

ColtPlatinum guides the project and coordinates commercial discussions and follow-up. Colt validates feasibility, enters into the service contract, and provisions, installs and delivers the services.
