Spectrum

Keep your transponders and delegate the optical line system.

Spectrum allocates spectrum for compatible customer equipment over Colt’s line system. Between managed Wave and dark fibre, review compatibility and operations.

This is a specialised option: optical compatibility, engineering and operations must be assessed end to end.

Let’s talk
Racks and optical fibre in a data centre setting.

How it works

Scale your transmission without deploying the entire optical line system.

Customer transponder A
Colt line system
Assigned optical spectrum
Customer transponder B

A boundary within the optical layer

The customer supplies and operates compatible transponders; Colt supplies the managed line system and agreed spectrum. The design defines signal injection and reception.

Validate channel width, modulation and signal compatibility with the route. Customer optical technology cannot be assumed to work over any line segment.

Compatibility and margin
Customer transponder B

Performance depends on optical margin

Modulation and transmission rate must fit the available margin. Review errors, signal quality and configuration with both operations teams.

A transponder change may require line-system revalidation. Technology flexibility is not permission to change it without coordination.

Recovery across two owners

Distinguish transponder, line-system and physical-route failures. The procedure defines who diagnoses each side and what evidence they exchange.

An alternative route needs planned spectrum, compatibility and equipment. Test recovery and maintenance before carrying critical loads.

Illustrative case: from situation to decision

Situation
The company operates transponders but does not want to deploy the entire line system.
Option
Compare Spectrum, Wave and dark fibre by the optical responsibilities the team wants to own.
Check
Validate transponders, optical reach, allocated spectrum and responsibility for degradation.

Spectrum is neither dark fibre nor Ethernet; transponders and the line system have different owners.

Decisions for your project

Optical compatibility
Transponders, modulation, assigned spectrum and signal budget.
Shared operations
Alarms, demarcation, changes and coordination between teams.
Route and evolution
Diversity, maintenance and revalidation of future upgrades.

From design to operation

Joint technology and route validation, signal testing and agreement on a shared operating procedure.
